My girlfriend and I spent one weeday night in January at this German spa hotel. We paid approximately US $300 before taxes, which included full use of their considerable spa facilities, an elegant dinner for two in their very upscale restaurant, and hot breakfast delivered to our room the next morning. It was, I would say, worth it, but not by much. but take away one of the meals, and it wouldn't be. I'm an American, and from that perspective, I would note that the German notion of "spa" has less to do with, say Canyon Ranch, and more to do with very serious hydrotherapy and aromatherapy. There are, perhaps, five different saunas, each clearly labeled with the temperature and essence -- orange rind, pine needles, that kind of thing. Also, people don't walk around looking relaxed -- they look intent. They seem to take this spa stuff quite seriously. The room was a tad austere, but undoubtedly first class, with a warming towel rack, high thread count bed linens, and sleek furniture. The hallways, like the guestrooms, have hard marble floors, which is a bit silly, because if anyone passes by your door with soles any harder than a sneaker, it's super duper loud. Most of the spa facilities were indoors, although the nice hot pool had an outdoor part, as well. As with most German spas, everyone is pretty much naked in the coed areas, which, I must say, only took an hour or so to get used to. Note that the additional spa treatments -- Turkish baths, massages -- can easily double the cost of your stay.

Recently I spend another great weekend at the Binzhof in Speyer (spa)! It is such a lovely place that I've already returned four times. It is not the cheapest place but they offer a couple of good packages and anyway the money is always worth it! It is a great place for relaxing in a calm atmosphere. The hotel has a lovely restaurant with exellent food and service. The connected spa area (that you can reach directly from your room) is usually not too packed. You can enjoy a variety of saunas from the finish one to an alpine hay sauna whick is great - and of cause you should not miss to try out the oriental rasul and tyrkish hamam (extra costs). The rasul and hamam just cannot be described but you probably have never been cleaner and more relaxed in your life before! :)
