Merrion Hotel, Dublin, Ireland
This hotel is all about gracious luxury: Frette linen sheets. Carrera marble bathrooms
with huge tubs. A collection of paintings by Irish artists displayed throughout the hotel.
Wonderful afternoon tea served in the drawing room with two fireplaces and even a harpist.
Great spa and gym, and the hotel even provides runners with maps for two separate three-mile
routes around the hotel area. All service was top-notch, from front-desk staff who got me a
wonderful room when I showed up without a reservation (!) to the concierge who tracked down
tickets to an obscure foreign film.
The Merrion is located on Upper Merrion Street pretty much in the heart of downtown Dublin,
across the street from government buildings and the National Gallery, an easy walk to St.
Stephen's Green, Grafton Street, and Trinity College. The main part of the hotel is a few
Georgian townhouses arranged around extensive gardens but the newer garden wing seems like
it has been part of the Merrion forever. Good brunch at the Cellar Bar with mellow folk duo
performance. Also should try Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud because it's right in the hotel
- renowned, pricey, but worth it.
