The Hotel Ambassade is located directly facing the Herengracht Canal in Amsterdam and is situated among ten different row houses so it is quite charming and no two rooms are alike. A room with a canal view is truly desirable if it can be arranged. Prices are reasonable, 180 Euro for a double is just about right for the sophistication and elegance of the Ambassade, and of note are the modern bathrooms, fresh flowers everywhere and lots of antiques. There are about 50 rooms so while you'll see other guests there won't be crowds, and there is a general air through the hotel of quiet tranquility. Note that although there is an elevator some rooms can only be reached via steep staircases. I actually changed rooms because my first room had brand-new carpeting, so new that the glue smell was overpowering, and the staff cheerfully moved me while I was out sightseeing. (The Ambassade is within walking distance of all key downtown sights like the Royal Palace, Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, the flower market and lots of great shopping and restaurants.) Breakfast is an amazing affair with meats, cheeses, boiled eggs and lots of cakes. The hotel library on the ground floor has bookcases full of editions signed by the many authors who have stayed at the Ambasade. But the highlight of the Ambassade is the Koan Float Center adjacent to and run by the hotel. It is a mini-spa offering massage therapy and float tanks. I had a very pleasant, relaxing, restful time at this hotel and I would definitely stay at the Ambassade again.
